Boston Celtics News: Brad Wanamaker enters C’s record books
By Mark Nilon
Brad Wanamaker ends the season leading the league in free-throw percentage and, in doing so, enters the history books for the Boston Celtics.
Since their formation as a professional ball club back in 1946, the Boston Celtics have become synonymous with two words: history and success.
From their league-leading 17 world championships to the iconic figures such as Bill Russell, Robert Parish, Larry Bird, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett who have donned the green and white threads, the team has had the kind fortune of finding success and seemingly making history at virtually every turn throughout their 74-year existence.
Now, as we’ve officially come to the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, it would appear that this trend has continued on once again.
While there are many success stories we could, in theory, discuss here — Jayson Tatum‘s All-Star campaign, Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, and Tatum all averaging over 20 points a game — today, we’d like to bring your attention to one particular backup who wound up making the record books of the league’s most storied ball club.
Brad Wanamaker ended his second season in the NBA leading the league in free-throw percentage, shooting from the charity stripe at a 92.6 percent clip. The reason why this is so significant for the team is that he has become just the fourth player in Boston Celtics history, and the first since Larry Bird back in 1989-90, to accomplish such a feat.
The list reads as follows:
- Brad Wanamaker (2020)
- Larry Bird (1984, 86, 87, 90)
- Larry Siegfried (1966, 69)
- Bill Sharman (1953-57, 59, 61)
As a whole, Wanamaker finished his campaign averaging 6.9 points, 2.5 assists, and two boards on 45 percent shooting from the floor and 37 percent shooting from deep. Heading into the postseason, he is slated to keep his role as Kemba Walker’s primary backup and, in turn, aid in the team’s mission to attain championship number 18.
Cheers to making history, Brad!
