Boston Celtics: 2 “boom or bust” candidates in the Disney bubble
Robert Williams
Robert Williams has missed a large chunk of the 2019-20 season, one in which many saw him as the solution at the center position. Instead, Daniel Theis has been unearthed as the unsung pivot problem solver while Williams’ role is undefined.
Ideally, he could use his defensive acumen to counteract some of the interior threats boasted by other Eastern Conference contenders. While Semi Ojeleye has proven effective in giving Giannis Antetokounmpo fits on his way to the rim, Williams is the kind of rim-protector that can meet him at the summit.
Williams is also more of a modern rim-runner than Theis, and could open up more opportunities in transition. With the C’s strongest at the wing positions, a faster and more athletic offensive attack could play into their strengths running up and down the floor.
Enes Kanter is a far more polished option off the bench, and has a proven track record as a successful starter with the Portland Trailblazers during their Western Conference Finals run in 2019. But he could prove unplayable in certain matchups, making the spotlight on Williams brighter and more pressure inducing.
His ability to reacclimate to the lineup under these circumstances could determine certain stylistic matchups. The potential for a breakout, or a breakdown, are both possible for Williams.
