Carsen Edwards

Carsen Edwards plays a role that the Boston Celtics may not have use for. Right now, the C’s are in the mix for one of the top records in the league. Naturally, winning leads to adding win-now veterans to plug the holes on the roster.

Edwards is a ball-dominant rookie who thrived at Purdue with a 37 percent usage rate in his senior year. He provided over 24 points per game, but to expect a smooth transition to the NBA after being featured so prominently was always a fool’s errand.

The Celtics front office might have expected that to be the case after Edwards dominated in summer league play, and they prematurely handed him a guaranteed four year deal worth over $4 million.

In the grand scheme it’s a small sum relative to other contracts handed out on a yearly basis. For the current Boston team, who has multiple first round picks coming up and few roster spots to satisfy them, it is a bit of a burden–especially considering his struggles when he played in the NBA before being demoted to the G-League.

At this point, a rebuilding team like the New York Knicks or the Detroit Pistons would satisfy Edwards’ needs more. Even a team like Golden State, who could offer him a role similar to fellow rookie Ky Bowman, would be a better long-term home than the Boston Celtics.
