Boston Celtics rumors: 3 NBA season suspension storylines
There’s no basketball but there has been plenty of news these past few days. What has been going on with the Boston Celtics and the league at large?
The NBA has contributed to the nonstop cycle of unpredictability that is 2020 with the news that a large group of players–none named from the Boston Celtics–had severe doubts about resuming the 2019-20 season.
Kyrie Irving was the leader of this contingent, and unsurprisingly he was rebellious in his nature:
"“I don’t support going into Orlando. I’m not with the systematic racism and the bulls***. Something smells a little fishy.”"
The main thought for players not wanting to return to play is that NBA games could take attention away from the ongoing civil rights movement to end systemic racism. Some players like LeBron James and Austin Rivers believe the league’s return could actually promote the cause via the national platform the NBA could provide.
Either way, the league hasn’t made any announcement suggesting the season might not resume. Additionally, Adam Silver will be live on ESPN tomorrow at 9pm eastern time to discuss the league’s return and he will be joined by the commissioners of the NFL, NHL, WNBA and MLS to discuss their returns.
Until something more concrete is put out by the league office, the season is set to resume for now. With health protocols still being rolled out and details on how exactly the “bubble” concept will work, how exactly the league will function when it returns is still not completely clear.
What is clear is that there are ripple effects of this player-led coup. Here are a few of them:
