Boston Celtics: 2 free-agents that would be perfect fits on Cs
By Mark Nilon
Perfect free-agent fit No. 1: Jordan Clarkson, SG
Here at the Houdini, we pride ourselves on not being blind followers of the Boston Celtics. While pride for the team is unbelievably high amongst our writing staff, we are never afraid to highlight the team’s flaws when we deem it necessary.
As for this year’s squad, one of the biggest weaknesses throughout the season has been their offensive production off the pine.
Ranking 29th in bench points-per-game, 27th in 3-point percentage, and 22nd in Offensive Rating, it’s evident both from the eye test and within the numbers that the C’s second unit could use for some fine-tuning come next season.
One way to fix this underwhelming stat-line is to scour the free-agency market for offensive-minded players. One specific option that would be perfect for the Boston Celtics is 27-year-old shooting guard Jordan Clarkson.
Now in his sixth year in the association, Clarkson finds himself suiting up for the postseason-bound Utah Jazz. Averaging 25 minutes a game — all while coming off the bench –, the veteran guard is boasting impressive averages of 15.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and just shy of a steal per game on 48 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent shooting from deep.
Known for the most part as being an offensive spark-plug off the pine, Clarkson would instantaneously fill the role that so many of us viewed Carsen Edwards having this season in Boston.
Outside of Marcus Smart (13.5 points per game), there is not one Celtics player that is averaging double-digit points coming off the bench — Enes Kanter ranks second behind Smart with 8.2 points.
Showcasing the ability to knock down catch and shoot jumpers, create space for himself when in isolation, and to simply just buy a bucket from anywhere on the court, having a guy like Jordan Clarkson in tow would be no short of a blessing for this title-contending Cs team to possess in their second unit that is sorely lacking of offensive productivity.
