Boston Celtics: 2 franchise-altering blockbuster trades
Sometimes winning teams need to make uncomfortable trades to bring them further to championship contender. Here are 2 such trades the Boston Celtics could make to shake up their roster for a deep playoff run.
“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” is a phrase that usually has a clear cut meaning. It’s harder to decipher when it comes to NBA rosters. Only one team wins the NBA Championship every season. Does that mean teams that don’t win every year have roster issues? Furthermore by that logic, have the Boston Celtics had a flawed roster for the last 12 seasons since their last NBA Championship?
The NBA is a tricky beast in that way. Every franchise has a different set of goals for each season, and thus have different expectations. A rebuilding team may be happy with the #8 seed, while a team like the 2018-19 Boston Celtics weren’t happy with the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Every situation dictates a different outcome when it comes to being happy with the results of the season. Even the 73-win Golden State Warriors of 2015-16 didn’t settle with their non-title winning roster and went out and signed the top free agent in the 2016 market in Kevin Durant.
So, what does that mean for teams in the current NBA landscape? Well, for one, things are much different now than they were even a year or two ago. No longer does the NBA Finals seem inevitable with the Warriors winning the west or LeBron James‘ team winning the east.
A handful of teams had championship aspirations heading into the 2019-20 season, especially after seeing the Toronto Raptors win their first championship last year. The beauty of Toronto winning the title was that they went all in for a title by trading for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green only to see them walk in free agency the following summer.
Now, other teams could be an upgrade away from being in the same position. That is what we are focusing on today. What franchise altering deals could Boston pull off that won’t change their long-term trajectory by trading away Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown?
Here are two that we came up with:
