In a strange turn of events, Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie seemed to open the door for every team in the league to sign him to a minimum contract when his current deal expires. Do the Boston Celtics have a chance at landing him?
So, in one of the most intriguing bits of NBA news amid the current season suspension, Spencer Dinwiddie seemed to toss his free agent fate in the air for NBA fans to determine where he will sign after his current deal ends. That opened the door for every team–including the Boston Celtics, who could use Dinwiddie as a backup point guard behind Kemba Walker–to sign him eventually for a minimum deal.
As Dinwiddie explained, the idea is tied to his involvement in Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency that has taken off in the last half decade:
"“I’m simply creating this GoFundMe as my commitment to my previous tweets. As of now 2625.8 BTC is roughly equivalent to $24,632,630 USD. If we hit the target then I will allow the fan base to determine my next team decision and sign a one year contract at that destination. If we do not hit the target goal then I will be donating 100% of this campaign to charity. Fan engagement comes in all shapes and sizes, lets have fun folks!”"
While the likelihood is that the money will ultimately be sent to charity, the idea is an intriguing one…and one that can’t make his current team very happy. I’ve said before that Dinwiddie is a dream target for the C’s, with his ability to legitimately lead the offense being a perfect fit for Boston. He still is, and with this news likely to create a chasm between him and the Nets, perhaps he can be available before signing any new minimum contract when his current deal expires.
His cap figure isn’t very high and his value far outweighs his salary. In terms of offering value back in any deal, the Celtics have young players and centers, something Brooklyn may not be looking for at the moment. Looping in a third team would have to be Danny Ainge‘s route, but with teams likely looking to take to the trade market in lieu of making any free agent additions, it may not be difficult to find a willing third trade partner.
Now, maybe the C’s could be the team that wins the Dinwiddie-Bitcoin sweepstakes and could nab him on the cheap in three summers. With his news, however, the Nets floor general may have burnt bridges with the franchise that gave him his breakthrough opportunity.
Maybe it’s all just a ploy to raise more money for charity. If this is serious though, and Dinwiddie is already talking about his next free agent destination, he may have thrust himself onto the trade block…if he wasn’t already on it with Brooklyn looking to add a third star to the Kevin Durant/Kyrie Irving tandem.
With any valuable asset that hits the market, the Boston Celtics have the means to create an intriguing trade package. Dinwiddie has always been a desirable option via the trade market and he may have made himself more available via this announcement.
