Boston Celtics: 2 players that need more playing time in 2020-21
By Mark Nilon
While the 2020-21 season is still a ways away, we here at the Houdini can’t help but feel these two players deserve extra minutes with the Boston Celtics next year.
The 2019-20 regular season proved to be unbelievably successful for the Boston Celtics. Though seeing a few hiccups along the way — injury bug bit quite extensively throughout the year — the team still managed to accumulate a record of 43-21, ranking them third in the Eastern Conference, fifth in the entire NBA and headed to their sixth straight playoff appearance.
Up until the COVID-19 induced hiatus on March 11th, it was evident that night in and night out the C’s were rolling out one of the most menacing core groups of players the league had to offer this year. Consisting of the likes of All-Stars Kemba Walker and Jayson Tatum, arguable All-Star snub Jaylen Brown, former All-Star Gordon Hayward and First-Team All-Defensive Swiss Army man Marcus Smart it appeared that no matter where you looked within their core rotation, there was always a talent that could give the opposition trouble.
However, a team is not made up of just five contributors. An NBA roster must consist of 13 players at a minimum and a max of 17 players.
The best teams typically have a deep core rotation. Unfortunately for the Celtics, however, as it currently stands it would seem their rotation is a bit shallow.
For most teams, the reason for this is usually chocked up to a few different reasons: lack of talent, injuries, bad fit, etc. In regard to the Boston Celtics, their lack of a deep rotation can likely be attributed to youth (average age hovers around 24-years-old) and inexperience.
However, once 2020-21 hits, it’s possible that the team’s young talents may prove to be ready to be bestowed more playing time and take on larger roles within the rotation, thus making it much deeper. In our eyes, there are two specific players who are deserving of such an upgrade within the rotation.
