Boston Celtics Mock Draft: projecting each C’s pick in the 2020 NBA Draft
By Mark Nilon
No. 17 — Devin Vassell, G, Florida State
Despite the fact that the Boston Celtics were seen as legitimate contenders to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals this year, the team still could use for some fine tuning in specific areas.
One of the team’s main weaknesses this season has been production within their second unit, specifically on offense. As things currently stand the C’s bench rank 29th in the league in points per game, 27th in 3-point percentage and 22nd in offensive rating.
With the salary cap expected to take a huge hit this offseason due to the Coronavirus pandemic it may be hard to try and help improve area of concern via free agency. Because of this, we could see the front office look to draft some talents to strengthen this specific area of weakness.
Enter Florida State guard Devin Vassell.
The 19-year-old guard saw massive improvements from his freshman to sophomore season with the Seminoles. Through 30 games Vassell was posting impressive averages of 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game on 49 percent shooting from the floor and 42 percent shooting from deep.
Showing the ability to excel off the ball and well as while creating for himself, there might not be another player at this selection that fits the mold of what the Celtics bench needs more than Vassell.
Though they may not need anymore wings on their roster, at this selection they should go for the best player available. If they find Devin Vassell still on the board at 17, they should swoop him up without any hesitation.
