Boston Celtics: 3 former C’s that would have been helpful this year
By Mark Nilon
Marcus Morris, SF/ PF (Celtics tenure: 2017- 2019)
Of all the former C’s included on this list, none had as grand of a 2019-20 campaign as Marcus Morris.
After not even getting a call by the organization in free agency — dumb move if you’re asking me — the New York Knicks swooped in and did what they always do: shelled out a boat load of money. On July 11th, Morris inked a one-year, $15 million contract with the Knickerbockers.
Though the team never wound up achieving much, the nine year veteran simply balled out in New York. Suiting up for 43 games Morris saw himself averaging career highs all across the board, registering 19.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and just under a steal per game on 44 percent shooting from both the field and beyond the arc.
Though playing some of his best basketball to date with the Knicks, he was still shipped off to the Los Angeles Clippers on February 6th with the idea that he would serve as a solid role player for the championship contending team.
Had Danny Ainge attempted to re-sign Morris last summer, perhaps the forward would be contributing for the other title contending team that resides in New England… and, boy, could they use his services.
Stated previously in this article, the Boston Celtics rank 29th in the NBA in bench scoring (27.2). They also find themselves ranked 27th in 3-point percentage (31.6) and 22nd in offensive rating (52.3).
To say Marcus Morris wouldn’t help significantly in improving these statistics would be an egregious lie for, frankly, he already proved he could do that while playing for the C’s before he was dropping close to 20 a night in New York.
Outside of his obvious offensive chops, Boston’s bench could certainly use for his defensive prowess and overall intensity on the court.
Morris proved to be an incredible asset to have in the C’s rotation during his two-year stint with the franchise. We at the Houdini believed it was a shame to see him leave without Boston putting up a fight.
In 2019-20, the team’s second unit could have seriously used his services.
