Boston Celtics: the argument for and against trading Romeo Langford
By Mark Nilon
Rookie wing Romeo Laangford had himself an up and down 2019-20 season with the Boston Celtics. From the looks of it, he could either be a long term building block or a valuable trade asset.
Danny Ainge has a tall task ahead of him this offseason. The Boston Celtics are stacked with multiple first round draft picks, but the team doesn’t exactly fit the profile of one that should be hoarding as much young talent as possible.
They did that last summer, bringing in two first round picks, two second round picks and the un-drafted seven-foot-five messiah known as Tacko Fall. Ainge even brought in international big man Vincent Poirier from France to round out his impressive and youthful offseason haul.
Having so much talent for the future is sound strategy, but this team showed in 2019-20 that it can win now. Their main building blocks are under 25, with Jayson Tatum being the team’s future superstar centerpiece at age 21.
This is all to say: they can win now. And they did plenty of that this past year before Adam Silver put a pause on the season due to the events transpiring across the globe.
So what does that mean for their future? Are they going to keep their three upcoming draft picks? They could plug the holes in the rotation with those assets. The backup point guard spot and their big-man rotation could use some reinforcements.
The wing is where the team is overloaded though. Between Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart, there is not many rotational minutes up for grabs. Add in Gordon Hayward‘s uncertain future, and it becomes even more of a headache for Brad Stevens.
Could that make Romeo Langford, the team’s under-performing lottery pick from last year, the odd man out?
To trade or not to trade Langford…that is today’s question:
