Brad Wanamaker

There has been nothing obnoxiously wrong with Brad Wanamaker‘s play this season. His field goal percentage and 3-point conversion rate have gone down from his low-usage rookie year, but that coincided with increased volume. He hasn’t stood out with any performances or through any of his attributes, but he’s been enough to not stand out like a sore thumb.

The roster makeup of the team should inevitably leave Danny Ainge with a tough choice. Wanamaker may be a casualty of the team’s 2019 draft class being comprised of two guys that are best suited at the point guard spot in Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters.

With Waters being on a two-way deal, there is a need to create an open roster spot in order to retain the G-League All-Star for 2020-21. Edwards is in the first year of a four-year deal that he earned after a scorching hot summer league performance in 2019.

Wanamaker is a free agent that the C’s have early bird rights for, giving him the ability to make the mid-level in a deal. Is he worthy of the resources needed to retain him?

The answer is a hard no. Waters and Edwards could be joined by another point guard from the 2020 draft class. Ainge is best suited to have three rookie-contract level players dueling for the backup spot over an established veteran who has spent much of his career playing abroad.
