Boston Celtics: Is Jayson Tatum the next great New England athlete after Tom Brady?
By Mark Nilon
With the fact that Tom Brady is no longer a Patriot, the quest officially begins for New England to coin their next great athlete. Might Boston Celtics’ wing Jayson Tatum one day fit this description?
Accepting the end of an era is never an easy task. From the Boston Celtics’ Paul Pierce & Kevin Garnett led squad coming to it’s end in 2013 to David Ortiz’s retirement in 2016, the New England area has gone through this emotional rollercoaster quite a bit throughout the past decade.
Now, this week the region must accept the end of the road for it’s, and perhaps all of sports’ greatest dynasty.
Monday, via social media, Patriots quarterback Tom Edward Patrick Brady Jr. (also known as just Tom Brady) announced to the public that, after 20 seasons, his time in New England was coming to and end.
This year’s NFL free agency has been an action packed time, with many players reportedly being on the move. But this is by far the biggest story of them all.
Through his two decade spanning career with the franchise Brady cemented his legacy as one of, if not the greatest quarterback to ever grace the turf. He holds all the records for the position within the Patriots organization, top-5 in virtually every statistical category imaginable for a quarterback league-wide and has brought the franchise six Superbowl titles — tied for most in NFL history as an organization, with Brady holding the record for most rings won personally.
Due to his accomplishments and accolades he has become one of the greatest talents in sports history and certainly the greatest New England player the region has ever seen.
Now with Brady reportedly heading to Tampa Bay to join the Buccaneers, the search has officially begun for New England to find it’s next great star. And, while there are a few options to choose from, in our eyes, none have as high of a ceiling as Boston Celtics’ third year wing Jayson Tatum.
Since coming into the league, all eyes have been drawn to Tatum due to his incredible athleticism, freakish length and sound all-around skill set. And, while he has impressed virtually every year he’s been in the league, 2019-20 has been his unquestioned best season to date, and a sign of what’s to come as the year’s go on.
Through 59 games, the 22 year old has put up career highs seemingly all across the board. In 34.6 minutes, Tatum is averaging 23.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and just shy of a block per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent shooting from 3.
With his performance, Tatum has led the Boston Celtics to a record of 43-21, third in the east and fifth in the entire NBA. Prior to the league’s suspension, the C’s managed to lock in their sixth consecutive postseason berth as well as a likely home court advantage first round series, thanks in large to their young stud.
His performance throughout the season was so great it landed him his first All-Star selection as well as recognition from all media outlets & some of the game’s all-time greats.
The stage is set for Tatum to be one of the greatest players not just in Boston’s history, but throughout the entirety of the region. Could he be the heir apparent to Tom Brady as the next great New England star?
