Improve second-unit scoring

If these past two games post All-Star break haven’t been enough of an indicator, the second unit’s offensive scoring production for the Boston Celtics so far in 2019-20 has been quite pedestrian at best.

Since returning to action — against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers — the C’s have scored a impressive total of 239 points. Of that number, the team’s bench has been responsible for a whopping 21 points.

For the season as a whole, things aren’t much better for the unit on the offensive side of the ball. As things currently stand, the Boston Celtics bench ranks 28th in the league in points-per-game averages (28.1), 27th in 3-point percentage (31.5) and 21st in the league in offensive rating (52.5).

The team could certainly use an extra oomph off the pine to help improve their offensive productivity. Isaiah Thomas could prove to be exactly that.

Through 40 games played with the Washington Wizards in 2019-20, Thomas managed to average a solid stat line of 12.2 point and 3.7 assists on 41 percent shooting from the floor and a career high 41 percent shooting from deep.

The point guard has made a name for himself as a scoring threat (averaged 18 points for his career) and would certainly be — for this and many other reasons — welcomed to the Celtics’ second unit with open arms if Danny Ainge decided to give the 5-9 baller another go in green and white.
