3 reasons the Boston Celtics are wrongfully counted out as contenders
Enes Kanter doesn’t get his due for improving on defense
When the Boston Celtics signed Enes Kanter after losing Al Horford to the Philadelphia 76ers–to an overpay they are likely already regretting with his recent bench demotion–Danny Ainge was criticized for the lack of a viable defensive replacement.
Kanter has been known for years as a lazy defender. This year, however, the narrative is being reversed…and the Boston Celtics are thriving because of that.
Kanter has been somewhat of a revelation (relative to his past) because of his commitment to improving on that end and the C’s culture.
"“From the first day I came here, that was our main focus, defense,” Kanter told NBC Sports Boston. “Everybody, the team, the organization, they knew I could post up and score the ball, rebound. But for us to get to the next level, defense … that’s my main focus. With Brad’s system, and if you play with players like this, the game becomes so much easier defensively.”"
National pundits don’t pay attention to the finer details, but Kanter’s improvements have been a major reason there hasn’t been a regression from Horford’s departure.
