Monday, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Boston Celtics are interested in acquiring Houston Rockets center Clint Capela. The Houdini believes that, while he is a fine player, he may cost the shamrocks too much to acquire.

As the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaches, fans can expect to regularly see “Woj Bombs” dropping left and right. One of his most recent explosions pertained to the Boston Celtics.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the C’s are one of a few teams engaged in trade talks with the Houston Rockets to potentially acquire Clint Capela.

With this, it is apparent that Danny Ainge and co. are aware that the team’s pivot spot does need some improvements if they want the C’s to be legitimate contenders in 2020. Clint Capela’s athletic abilities and style of play would seemingly mesh quite well with the team’s current core.

For months now we’ve stated that the Boston Celtics should look into acquiring defensive oriented & glass gobbling bigs to shore up their interior ‘D’ and and second chance opportunities. We’ve even recently discussed a trade that the team could do to deal a player with these talents.

Capela, too, is a big who fits this description.

So far in 2019-20 the six year veteran is boasting solid stats of 13.9 points, 13.8 rebounds (4.3 being offensive) and 1.8 blocks per game on 63 percent shooting from the floor (fourth best in the league).

Truth be told, there is no questioning whether Capela is a good player or whether he’d be an upgrade at the five for Boston: he is and would be. However, despite this being the case, with his salary coupled with the fact that Houston is looking for wings in return for the 25-year-old, he may be a bit out of Boston’s price range.

Almost every trade centered around Capela would probably include Romeo Langford in it. And, while the wing hasn’t had too much of an impact for the C’s so far in 2019-20 (2.3 points .9 boards on 46 percent shooting) it must be stated, the kid’s still a rookie!

Due to injuries and time spent in the G League, many are viewing this campaign as somewhat of a “red shirt season” for Boston’s most recent lottery selection. Would it really be worth exchanging someone of Langford’s potential for a center who, while good, has somewhat of a low ceiling thanks in large to his offensive deficiencies?

Other wings such as Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are certainly off the table in these discussions and, though Gordon Hayward would more than work, salary wise, the swapping of him for Capela seems to be somewhat like an overall talent downgrade if you ask me.

To sum things up: Should the Boston Celtics look into upgrading their center rotation? Yes.

Is Clint Capela a fine player? Yes.

However, with what it would probably cost to acquire his useful yet capped services, it may be wise of the Boston Celtics to sit this one out. Unless they can convince Daryl Morey to accept a package of Daniel Theis, Vincent Poirier, Semi Ojeleye, Brad Wanamaker and a pick or two — and I don’t expect this to be the case — Ainge should probably hold off on dealing for the center.

Gordon Hayward has been Al Horford 2.0 for this year’s C’s. dark. Next
