Elena Delle Donne

Could Elena Delle Donne be the female Larry Bird? If you take a look at their games, there are very obvious comparisons. While Bird played in an obviously more physical style of play, the two both dazzle in the mid-range would their footwork, and both have some of the smoothest 3-point strokes their respective leagues have ever seen.

The thing about Delle Donne that makes her such an intriguing possibility for the Boston Celtics is her spot-up ability. For her career, she shoots over 40% from the 3-point line. If you are someone that believes that the difference between the NBA 3-point line and the 3-point line used in the WNBA is significant, you should save that same skepticism for any NCAA prospect that reaches the association.

There is something so poetic about Delle Donne’s game. The way she seamlessly finds her spot on the elbow and pulls up is reminiscent of Paul Pierce’s and Jayson Tatum’s in-between game. Like Pierce, she has had the ability to absorb contact and still sink the shot with pinpoint focus.

Delle Donne is the WNBA’s preeminent star at the moment, having just won the 2019 WNBA Championship with the Washington Mystics after an MVP season. In a Boston Celtics uniform, she would bring her 3-point shooting to a forward rotation that could use it.

Delle Donne deserves an NBA shot more than anyone, and as one of the players Bryant named that he believes can hang in the league, her greatness could well transcend gender barriers.
