Ranking the Boston Celtics among the other potential Davis Bertans destinations
1. Boston Celtics
If you think there is a better package of assets that any team would reasonably trade for Davis Bertans for, then share those thoughts with me. I couldn’t see it if I had a telescope.
The Boston Celtics, for years, have been putting themselves in the best position to acquire anyone that hit open market. Sometimes, they didn’t make a deal and ended up with a player like Guerschon Yabusele in the first round. Other times, an All-NBA talent like Kyrie Irving entered the fold.
Danny Ainge has gone either way with his moves, but he has done enough to end up with one of the most talented cores in the league. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are the All-Star hopefuls he was hoping to land with the #2 and #3 picks in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Marcus Smart turned out well for the #6 pick, occupying the elite sixth-man space in the NBA stratosphere.
Landing Bertans could be the next big break for Ainge, especially if he can land him at a minimal cost. Given the competition for his services, acquiring Bertans may force Ainge to relinquish the Memphis Grizzlies’ 2020 first round pick. If he could limit the damage to just that pick and give up just one of his 2019 rookies, he could end up boosting this team’s ceiling to Eastern Conference dark horse to a full-on contender.
Whatever the case is, the Boston Celtics have the capability to overpay for Bertans if they really wanted to. Ainge has several first round picks from the most recent draft, and has done a good job of signing players to value contracts to match salaries.
Make no mistake about it: the C’s are in control of the Davis Bertans sweepstakes. Whether or not they land him will be determined by whether or not Ainge matches the Wizards’ asking price. The question is most certainly not whether they have enough to land him.
