Kemba Walker is ruled out for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. In turn, the Boston Celtics have recalled Tremont Waters to add depth to their backcourt.

Game one of the Boston Celtics’ grueling 23 games in 42 nights has started off on the wrong foot, as it is reported that All-Star point guard Kemba Walker has been ruled out tonight with the flu. With this unfortunate news, the team has responded by recalling their rookie point guard Tremont Waters from the team’s G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

Through three outings with Boston, Waters has averaged 4.7 points and one assist while shooting 41% from the field in 9.3 minutes per game. The last time Walker was out while Waters was activated to the team’s roster the rookie was granted significant playing time — that flowed well into the fourth quarter — and produced admirably.

In this November 25th home tilt for the Boston Celtics against the Sacramento Kings, Waters managed to record seven points, three assists, two rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 19 minutes of action. He ended with a box +/- of +20 and, along with his efforts, the Celtics came away with a hard fought victory in the closing minutes.

Since then, Waters has been used sparingly in the C’s rotation, seemingly only logging minutes in garbage time situations. However, if his previous experience playing while Walker was out is any indicator, perhaps we may be seeing the 21-year-old receiving ample playing time during this upcoming stretch right off the bat.

The two-way player has spent a majority of his time this year in the G-League, where he has been on an absolute tear. Through 15 outings, the LSU product is averaging 20.4 points, 7.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game on 38% shooting from downtown.

Next. Grueling upcoming schedule will be a huge test for Celtics. dark

Earlier in the day we published an article projecting who could turn out to be pivotal contributors during the team’s harrowing schedule in January through mid February and listed Waters as one of said players. It appears as though he’ll get a shot at leaving his mark earlier than we anticipated.

Tonight’s tip-off starts at 7 PM (ET). As always, go Celtics!
