The new year–and new decade–is upon us. With the 2010’s in the rear-view, the Houdini looks ahead to names that could be on the Boston Celtics radar in 2020.

The confetti has fallen and the ball has dropped. 2020 is in full swing, and it has not been a more exciting time to be a Boston Celtics fan in quite some time. That’s what happens when your team is one pace for a 60+ win season at the current rate the team is going.

It is an oft-used cliche on this very site, and by really any basketball (and in broader terms any sports) blog but it deserves to be uttered again: no team should ever feel confident enough to not look for ways to improve.

Danny Ainge has never been complacent. Look at what he did this past off-season. This roster is almost unrecognizable to the team that flamed out of last year’s playoffs. But don’t think he isn’t looking to improve even with the way the team has performed this season.

In the coming months, we will know how close this team is to actually contending for a title this year. Could they be reminiscent of the 2018 team that was one Eastern Conference Finals win away from the NBA Finals? Or are they like the 2015-16 team that won 48 games but was promptly bounced from the playoffs in the first round?

That remains to be seen, because just about anything–from injuries to trade demands to tragedy–can change everything in an instant. But the one constant will be the front office’s dedication to improvement.

In 2020, whether it be through the buyout market in March, to free agency in June, to even the trade market right now, the team will add talent.
