The Boston Celtics have signed former player Greg Monroe to a 10-day contract, according to a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Of course, the Center is no stranger to Celtics fans as he has already had a stint with the team back last season. Monroe played 26 games for Boston and averaged 19.1 minutes per game, 10.2 points, and 6.3 rebounds.
His best performance as a Celtic came in a 111-104 win over the Chicago Bulls on April 6, 2018. He became the first Center since Robert Parish to record a triple-double, it was also his second ever as he finished with 19, 11, and 10.
The 28-year-old had previously played 38 games for the Toronto Raptors earlier this seasons and even managed to make a couple of starts. However having only managed 11.1 minutes, 4.8 points, and 4.1 rebounds his time in Toronto was cut short, as the Raptors traded him to the Brooklyn Nets for cash considerations – he was waived by the Nets.
It’s not yet known how the Celtics plan to use Monroe, but with Aron Baynes now back on the sidelines it’s a move that will provide depth for the team as they make their final push towards this year’s playoffs.
It has also been reported that the team’s decision will not have any effect on the recently added Thomas Robinson, who has recently joined the Celtics G-League affiliate Maine Red Claws. The former fifth overall pick from the 2012 draft could still be an option for the team should they call upon him. (per Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith)
Given his more established experience in the league, it makes a lot of sense that the team felt that Monroe was a preferred option over the possible call up for Robinson.
The Celtics are back in action tomorrow night when they take on the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center, wrapping up a short two-game road trip.
