Bench Shows Life

One definite positive takeaway from this game was the Celtics bench.

The Celtics’ B.W.A.– led by Marcus Smart‘s infectious energy on defense– cut down the Magic lead on multiple occasions. If the Celtics are to meet the expectations placed on them this season, the Celtics bench will need to perform at a high level every night and this game was a step in the right direction.

With Aron Baynes nursing a hamstring strain on the sidelines, Brad Stevens gave Daniel Theis an extended look and Theis showed his worth scoring 7 points and provided a solid rebounding presence in his time on the court. Daniel Theis has become somewhat of the forgotten man in Boston but he was an integral part of the Celtics stout defense a year ago and was making strides in showing a nice three-point stroke as well before his injury.

Terry Rozier and Marcus Morris Sr. provided the usual scoring punch they are known for, but the playmaking of the second unit leaves much to be desired as they only managed two assists as a group tonight.

Another area that the Celtics bench could improve upon is setting the tone early, with starting-caliber players like Rozier, Smart and Morris, they should be able to bully opposing team’s second units but often enter the game without any physical presence as they opt for perimeter shots over attacking the paint.

On a night where the Celtics couldn’t throw a rock into the ocean, it’s hard to fault them too much for not having more assists but the second unit’s assist numbers are something to keep a close eye on as the season progresses.
