The Paul George Rental

The Paul George situation is an ugly one. The Associated Press reported that George’s camp informed the Pacers that he will not be signing with them in 2018. This shouldn’t be a shock for anyone in Indiana as George as been fairly public regarding his disappointment with the team. Still, it prompts the Pacers to make a move.

Many teams have come out as suitors for George, but not many are willing to pay the price. You see, George is a free agent in 2018, so whatever team decides to deal for him must realize the possibility of having him for just one year.

Also, George has been linked to the Lakers as desired destination since the trade deadline. There seems to be a growing belief among front offices that he will eventually end up in LA.

So far the teams I have heard that are trying to get George are the Lakers, Wizards and the Cavaliers. There has been whispers of Boston, but as of now there seems to be nothing real to report on.

However, the Celtics could become serious players in the George sweepstakes if they want to. As I stated earlier the Lakers have given the Pacers their best offer thus far, and apparently, it’s not that good. Here’s Marc Stein’s report on the alleged package:

If the Celtics really wanted to pry George away and try to “woo” him into signing long term they have the assets. I believe the Celtics could pry away George with a package of just the #3 pick or the Lakers protected 2018 pick, along with Terry Rozier and possibly Guershon Yabusele.
