Boston Celtics: Isaiah Thomas Not Happy with 2K Rating
By Jeremy Karll
NBA 2K is the most popular NBA video game out there, and some players aren’t happy with their rating
If you love sports and like to play video games in your free time then this is one of the best parts of the year for you – Madden, NBA2K and Fifa are all coming out within a month of each other. While Madden still might be the most popular sports game out there, NBA 2K and Fifa are definitely catching up. Sports fans still go crazy about the new releases every year – I bought Madden the first day it came out and plan on doing the same with 2K and Fifa.
It’s a way to see your favorite players in any jersey you’d like. It’s always fun to take the most exciting players and play with them, or try to act as an NBA General Manager and somehow fix the Brooklyn Nets. With all the new game modes that have come with the online gaming era, there’s honestly never been a better time to be a gamer than now.
Even for non-gamers, seeing the ratings is fun. It’s a taste of the NBA in the midst of the dog days of summer and gives an idea of where players rank among each other.
Rookies love to see themselves in the game, giving them their own Madden moment. While most rookies usually sport a low-70 rating, or even in the 60s, it must be a surreal feeling to see yourself in a 2K game. Top overall pick Ben Simmons is rated 79 overall to start his career, a solid rating as a rookie.
Unlike the old days of 2K before online gaming, ratings constantly change based on in-season performances, and there are new cards every week in Ultimate Team based on the top performers each week. Either way, players love to get a sneak peek at their rating and share it on Twitter.
As you can see, Marcus Smart is a 76 overall and Jonas Jerebko is 73. Both are solid ratings for bench players, and it makes Smart one of the better backup guards in the game. Although, I’d like to see if Ronnie 2K gave him a D- for outside shooting or if he got an F.
Despite most players being thrilled to see themselves in another 2K game, there was one member of the Boston Celtics who was less than pleased with his rating. Of course it was Isaiah Thomas. He has never been shy on Twitter and after getting a sneak peek at his rating, well, he wasn’t too thrilled about it.
Thomas wrote, “Appreciate @Ronnie2K sending me my @NBA2K rating but damn low blow once again lol… I should be at least a 88!” He was an 85 overall to start the season. Based on how point guards were rated last season, an 85 should put Thomas around the seventh best point guard in the game, which seems about right. Steph Curry will likely lead the way for a second consecutive year, this year with a possible 99 rating. Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook are the only other point guards with a chance of earning a 90 overall or above.
Thomas is coming off a season in which he averaged 22.2 points and 6.2 assist per game, and was named to the All-Star team, but he’s still not a bonafide top-five player at his position. An 88 would put him ahead of Andre Drummond and I don’t think many people would agree that Thomas is a better player than Drummond, yet.

According to Hardcoregamer.com, only Drummond and Karl-Anthony Towns own a higher rating than Thomas out of the players who have tweeted it out. Hassan Whiteside was also rated an 85 overall.
There are always some questionable ratings when any video game comes out, but Ronnie 2K seems to have Thomas’ rating correct. Based on last year’s ratings, an 85 would put Thomas around the 20-25th best player in the game, which is fitting. Starting the season out hot will help his rating increase this season, and there’s a good chance that another All-Star caliber campaign would boost his rating to 87 or 88 in next year’s game.
2K ratings are slowly getting released to the public and Isaiah Thomas will not be the only one unhappy with his overall rating. Still, 88 and above is usually reserved for the top-three at each position and you’d be hard-pressed to say Thomas has reached that point of dominance.

Isaiah Thomas has been no stranger to Twitter comments this summer, and it’ll likely continue as we still have a couple of months until the start of the season. It’s doubtful that Thomas is actually broken up about a video game rating, but hopefully it adds even more fuel to the fire as he heads into his second full season with the Boston Celtics.
