Report Card: Boston Celtics Draft
By Jeremy Karll
23rd Pick – Ante Zizic
I’m really high on this kid and think he could end up being the best international big man from this draft. And yes, that includes Dragan Bender.
The FIBA Center of the Year has already expressed his interest in coming to the NBA right away, however, said he has not made his decision yet when asked on Thursday. It would be best for Ante Zizic to stay overseas for another season or two to develop his game since the Celtics won’t be able to offer him enough minutes for him to develop at a consistent rate.
Only time will tell whether Zizic will come over right away or not, but either way, he’s a solid pick by the Celtics. I had him going to Boston with the 23rd pick in most of my mock drafts leading up to Thursday.
A lot of European teams and NBA scouts say he’s already one of the best rebounders in Europe. That’s high praise for a 19-year-old, however, when looking at his huge 6’11” and 245 pounds frame and lengthiness, it makes sense. He has great technique when it comes to grabbing boards and that should be what opens up minutes for him in the NBA.
Offensively, he’s still developing a jump shot but it’s far from a finished product. Zizic does most of his work around the rim, usually trying to dunk the ball. He’ll need to continue to refine his post game if he wants to be a consistent scorer in the NBA.
His biggest need for improvement is on the defensive end, although I have very high hopes for him. Zizic is extremely athletic for his size, which gives me hope he can become a solid perimeter defender. Although, his big build and length will make him a rim protector in the future. Some people don’t see him that way, however, he’s going to a very defensive-oriented team and has all the physical tools to become one.
Passing on Deyonta Davis was tough to watch, but I can’t argue with this potential draft-and-stash prospect. Zizic has a chance to be a starter for Boston in a couple of years.
