Report Card: Boston Celtics Draft
By Jeremy Karll
16th Pick – Guerschon Yabusele
One of the most surprising picks of the draft was when the Celtics selected Guerschon Yabusele in the middle of the first round. He would have likely been there when they were back on the clock at 23, and possibly early in the second round. The grade I gave Yabusele isn’t based off his talent, rather due to the Celtics reaching to take him.
Guerschon Yabusele won’t come to over to the NBA next season, although he looks like a very good investment. The first thing you notice about him is his amazing build. He’s huge but moves very well for a big man.
In an era where small ball is becoming the norm, Yabusele looks like the perfect fit for that style of play in a couple of seasons. He reminds me of Paul Millsap or Draymond Green, not necessarily at their talent level but the same body type and style of play.
Not many people had Yabusele pegged anywhere in the first round, so not many people in Boston know what to expect. In reality, Yabusele projects to be a solid bench player when he comes over to the NBA. He’s a decent defender who will make his living on offense and providing a center in a small ball lineup.
He is a good pick-and-roll player, however, his shooting ability is what stands out the most. Yabusele shot 42 percent last season in his French league, while also being able to dunk with ease and being semi-explosive to the rim.
Yabusele is one of the bigger question marks the Celtics own, but he could end up being a very good selection down the road.
