Three Stars as Celtics Blow Big Lead in Loss to Magic

Things could not have looked any better out of the gate, as the Boston Celtics were firing on all cylinders putting together a great 20 point lead. Unfortunately, one good quarter will not account for three horrible quarters, as the Celtics lost 98-103 in Orlando. After the great start the offense looked completely out of synch and all the defense could do is keep the game within reach. Isaiah Thomas remained his usual productive self, but it was a career night from Brandon Bass that was truly wasted in the blown opportunity against the Orlando Magic.

In case you missed it, here is a quick recap followed by our three stars!

Third Star – Victor Oladipo

22 Points 7 Rebounds 5 Assist.

The Celtics did not have much of an answer for Oladipo who continues his hot streak by filling up the stat sheet. Oladipo was effective and productive in many ways. The game’s leading scorer shot 7-16 more the field but did a lot of his damage shooting 6-6 from the free throw line. Oladipo played a solid game defensively, his seven rebounds were complimented by another two steals. His efficient play was highlighted by a 5-1 assist to turnover ratio, which lead to his solid +15 on the evening. Oladipo saw his responsibility increase with the absence of Vucevic and he did a solid job in the Magic’s comeback win.

Second Star – Brandon Bass

19 Points 17 Rebounds 5 Assists

Brandon Bass did everything he could to help preserve the Celtics’ great start, but his aggressive boarding and efficient scoring was not enough. Bass did a great job of taking advantage of the void left by the absence of Vucevic as his 17 boards was the most impressive feat from the Celtics on the night. Bass was also the teams second leading scorer behind Thomas, and he did so by taking advantage of his opportunities, shooting 9-14. Bass has increased his offensive output with the absence of Avery Bradley, but a lot more help was needed to prevent the Celtics from blowing their huge lead.

First Star – Elfrid Payton

19 Points 10 Rebounds 7 Assists

Despite having great depth at the guard position the Celtics certainly missed Bradley’s defensive presence as Payton took advantage of an easier defensive matchup. Payton flirted with a triple double as he was the most dominant player in all phases of the game. Payton was also a +16 on the night, which was the best out of all their starters. Payton did not take over the game as many different Magic player contributed well. That being said, he put together one of his more complete performances of the season and is the best candidate the lead the three stars of the game.
