All Of These Ray Allen Trade Rumors Are Absurd

Something has really been bothering me lately as I search the web for the most up to date Celtics news. That has been the completely ridiculous and absurd trade rumors involving Celtics guard Ray Allen. I don’t know if it’s people looking to make a name for themselves, people just looking to report any news they get their hands on, really I don’t know what it is but I wish people would think before they type.

I will be the first one to admit  to you that Ray Allen is not performing up to expectations and at some points during the season he has actually hurt the team. He is currently shooting a career low 34.1% from three point land and is averaging 15.7 ppg,  his lowest since his rookie season. With that being said the Celtics should probably be looking for ways to make this team better so that they can make a serious run at banner eighteen.

But people, come on. Think about some of these rumors and trade idea’s before  you go blabbing your mouth about them. Half of them make no sense what so ever whether it be financially, for the Celtics, or for the other team involved.

As most people have probably heard by now the most talked about Ray Allen trade rumor had him being shipped to Golden State. What a deal right? Yes, for the Celtics this was a fabulous deal but why in the world would the Warriors ever do this? They would most likely lose the future of their franchise, Monta Ellis, along with a good role player. And what would they get in return? A veteran on the decline who carries a 20 million dollar expiring contract.

I recently spoke with Gary Washburn from the Boston Globe about the trade and he made a very good point by bringing up the economic troubles in the league. He thought that it would make no sense for the Warriors to dump 20 million on Ray this season, and thought it was even more foolish when I brought up the rumor that they could possibly buy out his contract. Just to back all this up Warriors coach Don Nelson simply “laughed it off” when this rumor was brought up to him.

And for those of you who might have thought Golden State fans were for this trade, check out this excerpt from SB Nation’s Warriors blog, Golden State of Mind:

"BUT trading him for an expiring contract at this point is just foolish. Absolutely foolish. Ray Allen is on the decline and will not re-sign with the Warriors this offseason. That cap space is worthless for a team owned by Chris Cohan.Don’t get me wrong. I do love Ray Allen. I mean who doesn’t love some Jesus Shuttleworth? But this isn’t about the Warriors bringing in Ray Allen, it’s about dumping more money from the books."

(This guy sure won’t help us)

So now that you know that trade WILL NOT HAPPEN, let’s move onto a more recent rumor. Yesterday, as reported by Yahoo Sports, the Celtics have reportedly been in talks with both the Miami Heat and New York Knicks about deals that would include shipping Ray.

Let me start off by asking you this, are the Celtics playing for this year? I, and I hope you do as well, believe that the Celtics are playing for this year. With that being said let me ask you another question, Who on the Miami Heat, besides Dwyane Wade, or on the New York Knicks would make this team better than they currently are? The answer is nobody, I can not think of a trade involving Ray Allen, and these two teams (Knicks and Heat), that could possibly increase the chances of raising banner eighteen.

So all you reporters looking to make a name for yourself by reporting completely absurd rumors should do yourselves a favor and stop making yourselves look like fools. It’s one thing if rumors have some legitimacy, are clearly thought out, and work for both teams. It’s another thing when they are foolish, not thought out, and do not accomplish anything for one, or both teams involved.

Oh and I forgot one thing, I’m not the only one who’s laughing at all of these absurd rumors. The man behind the scenes who would be making all of these trades, Danny Ainge,  took some time out of his day to laugh at these rumors.

Via Boston Herald:

"“Let me just put it this way: We’re doing everything we can to win a championship now,” Ainge said. “We’re not going to do anything that might hurt our chances of winning.“There’s no question we need to play better, but we’re not going to panic.”"

So let me end this little rant by saying this: Unless something spectacular comes up do yourselves a favor and expect to see Ray Allen wearing Celtics green for the rest of the year. And when the Celtics raise banner eighteen with close to the same roster as they have right now come back to me so I can say, “I told you so”.
