As of January 2ndat 7:30 pm EST it was very difficult to find anything positive going on with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics had lost three in a row and were missing four of their key players (Pierce, Garnett, Rondo, and Daniels). Tonight the red hot Toronto Raptors, winners of five in a row, were in town trying to take down the undermanned Celtics squad.
A Celtics team led by Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins came into the Garden tonight with one thing, and one thing only on their mind, VICTORY. The C’s controlled the game tonight for the most part and came out on top by the score of 103-96.
In order for the C’s to come out on top tonight they were going to need a complete team effort. That is exactly what the doctor ordered and exactly what happened. Tony Allen, J.R Giddens, and Rasheed Wallace replaced Rondo, Pierce, and Garnett in the starting lineup.
Six members of the good guys (Celtics) scored in double figures tonight. In previous games, in the absence of Pierce, it was noticable that different players were trying to do to much by themselves in hopes to make up for the offensive production missing without Pierce. Tonight the Celtics did way with that type of thinking and tried to get everyone involved in the offense.
Ray Allen led the Celtics charge with 23 points in the game, he didn’t force anything but instead took what the defense was giving him. Ray was the biggest offensive threat on the court during the game and proved it by knocking down shots when the team needed it the most.
Rasheed Wallace (16), Glen Davis (15), Kendrick Perkins (14), Tony Allen (14), and Eddie House (12) all scored in double figures during the game. Times like these are when we need Sheed the most and tonight he stepped it up, and played within himself. Sheed did exactly what he’s suppose to do when he’s out there, that being spread the floor andbe a presence inside. Tonight he was 2-5 from behind the arc, but also had multiple baskets inside.
Glen Davis returned to form tonight after coming back from another injury, he came off the bench tonight and really gave the team a offensive spark while int he game. He used his scrappy inside game to drop in 15 points. Kendrick Perkins performed like we have come to expect him to perform, tonight he registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. And that guy we all hated to begin the year, Tony Allen, you would have thought he was an all-star point guard. He was not Rajon Rondo, but he ran the offense effectively, he had 14 points and 7 assists on the night.
Without three of the five regular starters you may have thought the Celtics would just fold, instead they rebounded (no pun intended) from three straight losses and got back on the right track. Following tonight’s game the Celtics will head to Miami to start a brief three game road trip. Pierce and Rondo are expected to make the trip, while Garnett and Daniels will continue to rehab in Boston. I will end this recap like I have before by saying tonight before you go to bed please pray for the Celtics that are healthy to stay healthy, and for the injured Celtics to get well soon.
