Both the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics are built to contend for an NBA title, but the two teams haven’t been even in Las Vegas. The Lakers are 2-0 while the Celtics began their Summer League in Vegas and are 0-2.
The NBA’s oldest rivalry will be renewed just with Jordan Walsh and Max Christie not Jayson Tatum and Lebron James. Let’s get into the odds.
Lakers vs. Celtics odds, spread and total
- Lakers -3.5 (-110)
- Celtics +3.5 (-110)
- Lakers -155
- Celtics +135
- 185.5 (Over -110 / Under -110)
Lakers vs. Celtics prediction and pick
The Lakers struggled in Sacramento with losses to the Spurs (without Wemby) and the Heat. They gave up over 100 points in each of those, but the defense has been a lot better in Vegas. Last time out they allowed just 75 points to the Charlotte Hornets. That was an abysmal shooting performance by Charlotte though and likely had more to do with their offensive issues than the Lakers figuring out defense.
The Celtics have also struggled to get stops. They’ve allowed 103 and 99 points in their two Summer League games. Those defensive performances are the reason for a high total in this one, but I’m not sure that it is high enough. Boston has to like what they’re getting from Jordan Walsh, the rookie out of Arkansas who had 18 points against the Heat. Justin Champagnie has also impressed on the wing with 21 points against the Wizards. Those are the Walmart brand of Tatum and Brown for the Celtics Summer League squad.
The Lakers are relatively small with three guards, Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and D’Moi Hodge all in the starting lineup. Collin Castleton is a good rim protector on defense, but isn’t the most fleet of foot on the perimeter. Walsh and Champagnie will be a tough matchup, so I do think offense will be reliable. I’ll take the over tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Pick: Over 185.5
