Wow. Despite the final score, the Boston Celtics just gave their fans as much hope as one could possibly give in a loss to get the 2021-22 season started.

Forget the argument about whether moral victories exist for a second. The Cs came back from down 11 with three minutes and 44 seconds left in the final frame to force an overtime period with two spectacular 3-pointers.

One was created by a heroic isolation bomb from the logo, while the other was artistry in the execution of a last-second broken play. Both were essential in Boston taking the New York Knicks to two overtimes at MSG on opening night.

Following the 138-134 loss, the Houdini is here to grade the performances of several key Cs. And two former Cs now on the Knicks worth talking about:

Boston Celtics SG/SF Jaylen Brown’s game grade: A

Jaylen Brown delivered the game of his life when the Cs needed him most on Wednesday night. Without him, there is no spectacular comeback on a night where Boston’s best baller was struggling. More on that later.

But more on Brown now. In his return from a wrist injury that required surgery and knocked him out of the 2021 postseason, Brown proved that the Celtics may just have two All-NBA caliber players with a career-high night in scoring–amassing 46 points on 16/30 shooting from the field and 8/14 from the 3-point line–that peaked with a wild 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1 (114-113), leaving 5.3 seconds on the clock.

Brown’s career night may be the beginning of another leap from the Cal product. Knowing the Cs have two players capable of going for 45+ points on any given night should make all fans sleep well at night.
