Marcus Smart returns to his collegiate home state

Following with the “returning home” theme, Marcus Smart could find himself in the same state where he was became a #6 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 conference.

The Thunder are one of the league’s most obvious tankers in 2020-21 after making the NBA postseason in 2020 following a point guard swap with the Houston Rockets that saw Chris Paul make his way to the sooner state for Thunder legend Russell Westbrook.

They sat out Al Horford this season after he showed he still had plenty left in the tank following an unceremonious Philadelphia 76ers departure and currently start three undrafted players. No one is mistaking the Thunder for a team with immediate plans of contention.

Things could change in a year, though. If the team takes another step forward and hits on one or more of their 2021 NBA Draft picks, perhaps signing win-now veterans could be OKC’s course of action.

With pieces like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, and Darius Bazley in tow, there’s a foundation in place. All that’s needed might be some extra artillery and perhaps a war-torn veteran willing to get down in the trenches for the youthful franchise.

In that case, the seven-season Boston Celtics veteran could make a sooner state return himself in 2022.
