Projected starters: PG Jeff Teague, SG Marcus Smart, SF Jaylen Brown, PF Jayson Tatum, C Daniel Theis

Brad Stevens is unlikely to change much from last year’s starting lineup that made the Eastern Conference Finals and defeated the defending champion Toronto Raptors on their way to doing so. Without Kemba Walker, the best way to preserve that lineup synergy is by replacing the All-Star point guard with another former All-Star (I had to) in Jeff Teague.

Projected second unit: PG Payton Pritchard, SG Aaron Nesmith, SF Semi Ojeleye, PF Grant Williams, C Robert Williams

Tristan Thompson’s hamstring injury might be a bit trickier than what is being led on by Stevens and the coaching staff. The hamstring is a tendon that is easily reaggravated, and it’s certainly not a good sign the big man is ailing after he topped out at 57 games played last year after playing 43 in 2018-19 and 53 in 2017-18. In his absence, Robert Williams should be able to get plenty of floortime to prove that he could be the big man of the future.

Elsewhere, Payton Pritchard figures to nab the primary backup floor general role, while fellow rookie Aaron Nesmith and Semi Ojeleye fill out the wing. Grant Williams is the guy here most deserving of a starting role, but Teague’s veteran savvy is a safer early season bet as Kemba Walker gets healthy.

Projected reserves: PG Tremont Waters, SG Carsen Edwards, SF Javonte Green, C Tacko Fall

None of these guys figure to have a steady role in the offense, though Stevens could certainly deploy any of these guys for spot minutes. Three of the four spent the majority of last season with the G-League affiliate Maine Red Claws, while Javonte Green largely rode the pine when the team was at full strength.
