Boston Celtics: 3 wings C’s should target in the 2020 NBA Draft
By Mark Nilon
Devin Vassell, Florida State
In nearly every mock draft we’ve seen it appears Devin Vassell is selected just before the Celtics get a chance to nab him. Truth be told, as made evident in our introduction slide Boston does not need another wing on the roster.
However, if by some chance Vassell falls to them at 17, it might be wise of them to bring him aboard.
For practically the entire season, we here at the Houdini have been pleading that the C’s need to bolster their scoring presence off the pine. Ranking 29th in bench points per game (27.2), 27th in 3-point percentage (31.6) and 22nd in offensive efficiency (52.3) the team could use for a player who can consistently space the floor.
Couple that in with the fact that the salary cap is expected to plummet due to the COVID-19 induced hiatus and it’s a practical solution that the team should look to the draft to address these areas of concern.
In our eyes, no better player would fit this mold at 17 than Devin Vassell.
Averaging 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game on 49 percent shooting from the floor and 42 percent shooting from deep the wing showcased an impressive offensive game that allows him to excel off the ball as well as with it in his hands.
A consistent catch-and-shoot talent as well as an offensive initiator would be two welcomed assets to have coming off the bench for the Boston Celtics. With Vassell alone, they would improve both these areas.
Like the other two prospects included on this list, the wing appears able to defend and play multiple positions. At 6-6 with a wingspan of 6-9 the 19 year old has the length to guard positions from the one to even a small ball four.
His impressive offensive game along with his defensive versatility makes him the most intriguing wing for the Boston Celtics to nab in this year’s draft. If available at 17, Danny Ainge should take a swing at him.
