Mandatory Credit: Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

Tony Wroten is a combo guard, but if the Celts drafted Wroten and kept Rondo, he could start at two guard, assuming Ray Allen isn’t resigned. He has the size and strength to make a great combo guard, so when Rondo rests, Wroten could adeptly run the point. He moves his feet well laterally and has a great ability to see offensive plays in the making, which leads him to get a lot of steals. He is good with help side defense, something Doc Rivers emphasizes heavily, as do most good defensive coaches.

Wroten almost won PAC-12 Player of the Year as a freshman in his one collegiate season, but he has the potential to be a far better NBA player, like many college guys who only scratch the surface of becoming the player they can be. He’s athletic, and lefty, something that is a nice combination in many situations, and he would give the Celtics a different look by focusing the ball on different parts of the court, due to being lefty. He is good at getting long offensive rebounds and loose balls, something Rajon Rondo excels in, as well. He needs to learn to shoot off the dribble to maximize the lanes that Rondo’s penetration will open up, though, so perhaps he can adapt to getting more mid range jumpers and developing that facet of his game.

Some people worry about his mental makeup and say he may have baggage, but I hate when teams use that as a reason not to draft a guy. If Wroten slips and the Celts can nab him, it should work out pretty well in easing a lot of the ball handling pressures on Rondo and giving the Celts another ball handler who actually can shoot free throws.
