With Redick prepared to walk out of the door if not compensated properly, the Orlando Magic chose to deal him for expiring contracts and rookie deals. The Orlando Magic are sending J.J Redick along with Gustavo Ayon and Ishmael Smith to Milwaukee for Tobias Harris, Doron Lamb, and Beno Udrih according to Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.

It was expected that Orlando Magic were looking for a first round pick for Redick, but now the Magic will have enough cap space at the end of the season to go after multiple maximum contract players.

The Bucks will get a shooting guard who is efficient in his production shooting 39% from beyond the arch. Any minutes that he gets over Monta Ellis should be looked at as a plus for the Bucks.

It was widely thought that the Spurs were after Redick today, but it was reported that they didn’t have the assets to make the deal possible.

On the first night of February, the Rajon Rondo-less Boston Celtics look to start the month on a good note as they take on the Glen “Big Baby” Davis-less Orlando Magic. Davis, who broke his left foot in the first half against the New York Knicks, has been shut down for the rest of the season and joins Rondo on a long list of big name players being injured this season.

The Celtics come into the game on a two game winning streak after a huge victory against the Miami Heat on Sunday and crowning the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. Without Rondo, Boston has had to play a different style of basketball than they are accustomed to. Instead of running the half court offense, they’ve had to push the tempo much more and try running the fast break as often as possible. Courtney Lee seems to benefit from this style of play as he had one of his better games in a Celtics uniform against the Kings, and even though he only had 9 points in the game, he looked much more comfortable and in rhythm.

“The Pit Bulls”, Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee, played tenacious defense on the Kings backcourt. They can be expected to do the same against the Magic. If Boston can force turnovers and get on the fast break early in the game, the Celtics should have a much easier time scoring. Boston had a difficult time getting points in the half court game since Rondo is the one who directs and calls the plays on offense. To win this game, the Celtics need to run, and keep the pressure on the Magic.

January 20, 2013; Orlando FL, USA; Orlando Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick (7) shoots a three pointer against the Dallas Mavericks during the second half at Amway Center. Dallas Mavericks defeated the Orlando Magic 111-105. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

For the Magic, a majority of their points will come from their guards. J.J. Redick and Jameer Nelson combined for 50 points against the New York Knicks and when those two get going, no lead is safe. This is why pressuring the ball for the Celtics is a must. Boston cannot allow Redick or Nelson to shoot lights out, and with Glen Davis out, the Magic will become primarily a jump shooting team.

Players to watch for would be Jeff Green for Boston and Nikola Vucevic for Orlando. Green had 12 points against the Kings, making his first five shots. He will not be going up against against a player with great length so he should be able to get to the basket easily. Vucevic is someone I’d keep my eye on. The Celtics are not known as a great rebounding team, and given the opportunity, Vucevic could have a big night grabbing boards.

Prediction -

Even without Rondo, the Celtics get a victory by double-digits. If Boston boxes out on rebounding opportunities and continues to pressure the ball, making it hard for Orlando’s guards to operate, the Celtics should have no problem taking this game.

With news that Rajon Rondo is now out for the season, this may be even more so the case. Redick is averaging a career high 4.4 assists per game this year. With Rondo due to miss the remainder f the season, Redick’s ability to create shots for his teammates would help Boston save what could be a disastrous postseason sans Rondo.

Moving forward, the 28-year-old Redick would figure into Boston’s short and long-term plans. The Celtics rank 28th in the league in three point production, with only 16.5 points per game coming from distance. Redick would immediately ameliorate that shortcoming and help the C’s hit more from outside.

The problem for the Celtics may be how much Orlando is likely to ask in return for the Duke product. The Magic reportedly required both Derrick Williams and a first-round pick from Minnesota, so one would assume they would ask for a package of similar intrigue from Danny Ainge.

Jared Sullinger would obviously have mass appeal to a rebuilding team, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Magic sought to bring back Courtney Lee in the deal, as he thrived in Orlando to start his NBA career.

Lee left as a fan favorite in Orlando, and though his

promise as a player isn’t as high as people were billing it his rookie season with the Magic, Lee could find a home in Jacque Vaughn’s rotation as a great backup for sharpshooter Aaron Afflalo.

Danny Ainge must realize that to get Redick, he’s going to have to part with some talent, and that Rob Hennigan won’t back down and accept a weak offer from a team like the C’s who have some assets.

Sullinger and Lee is a good salary match and works under the cap for both teams.

The Hollinger analysis on ESPN’s Trade Machine predicts that the Celtics would improve by one win in the win-column, while the Magic would get four losses worse with the potential deal.

Maybe that’s exactly what they want in Orlando, with contention nowhere on the immediate horizon.
