A source close to the negotiations informed the Associated Press that the Boston Celtics and head coach Doc Rivers are working on a deal for “more than two or three years.”

Rivers, who was under contract through this season, expressed his desire to return to Boston following last night’s game citing unfinished business with the Big Three. Said head coach Doc Rivers: “I haven’t made that decision, but I can tell you I probably will, I’m a Celtic and I love our guys. I want to win again here, and I’m competitive as hell. I have a competitive group, so we’ll see. I can tell you that is where I am at today. Tomorrow, I may change my mind. But, that’s where I am at today.”

Doc Rivers is one of the premier coaches in the league and bringing him back into the fold is just as important as one of the potential on court signings the Celtics will entertain in the off season.

Said guard Rajon Rondo following the game five loss to the Miami Heat: ”I’m going to put this on the record, Doc already committed that he was coming back with me so he can’t go back against his word. … We just signed a contract about 10 minutes ago.”

The Big Three are what made the present day Celtics bringing them back into the forefront of the NBA landscape. However, every good coach knows their team’s strengths and of course their weaknesses. Said head coach Doc Rivers: “We’re not going to win it just relying on the Big Three anymore, we just can’t, but we can win it with the Big Three. So our job this summer, we have to go out and sign a couple of players. We don’t need any superstars, we need the right pieces to complement those guys so those guys can play less minutes and we can still win games and get to the playoffs healthy.”

Until Doc officially signs his deal, he will be rumored for every potential opening around the league. Hard to believe he would leave the Celtics, but I, along with every Celtics fan, hope this happens as soon as possible.
