The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Clippers killed their deal to trade Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to the Los Angeles Clippers two days ago. Now, as expected, its back on. With a little help from Chris Paul, as Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports, the deal is back on and heating up.

With a full understanding that free agent Chris Paul wants this deal completed, the Los Angeles Clippers re-engaged the Boston Celtics on the Kevin Garnett-Doc Rivers negotiations on Wednesday afternoon, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Clippers walked away from the talks on Monday morning, insisting that Boston’s asking price ofDeAndre Jordan and two first-round picks was too steep of a price for Garnett.

The Clippers have long been a franchise ridiculed by the rest of the league. It seems that they have become serious about spending money in order to retain Chris Paul–something that Donald Sterling has been very coy with in the past.

To complete this deal, the Clippers will have to extend Doc Rivers already lucrative contract and pay a trade kicker of $3.5 million to send Deandre Jordan to the Celtics. Right now, Woj reports, the deal is only hinging on a single first round draft pick. The Celtics want to first round picks and Deandre Jordan in return for Rivers and Garnett.

ESPN’s Marc Stein has taken to twitter to report that things have been progressing on the trade front and it seems that a deal will get done very soon.

Latest w/@ramonashelburne: One source close to Clips/Celts talks expressing optimism parties could agree to trade terms as soon as tonight

— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 19, 2013

Most likely framework, amid signs of progress in talks, remains DeAndre Jordan for KG & two first-rounders for Doc Rivers’ coaching rights

— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 19, 2013

It seems that the Celtics and Rivers were aware that it would be hard to repair the damage that has already been done by requesting a trade. With Rivers not wanting to be in a rebuilding phase and Garnett likely on the way out along with Pierce, this seems like the proper direction to go in.

Chris Paul really wants to play with Garnett and be coached by Rivers. There isn’t a better situation in the league for Rivers or Garnett. And if Pierce comes along later in the summer after the Celtics waive his contract, they’ll get the last run on a competitive team that they all want.

After asking for a change of scenery, Doc Rivers is skeptical about returning as the head coach of the Boston Celtics next season. Its reported that Ainge said that he wants Rivers to return, but after his trade request he may not be able to.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports:

After talks in a blockbuster deal fall apart over draft pick compensation, Doc Rivers is unsure about returning to the Boston Celtics as coach, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge informed Rivers of the failed trade talks on Tuesday morning, and reiterated the Celtics’ desire to have him return and fulfill the final three years and $21 million left on his contract, sources said.

The Celtics and Rivers planned to reach a final resolution in the next few days, sources said.

I’m sure that the two sides will come up with something in the next few days. If Rivers doesn’t return, there are a bevy of coaching candidates that the Celtics could choose from. But they can’t allow Rivers to hold them hostage or they may miss out on a good one.

If Rivers doesn’t want to coach in Boston he shouldn’t. We’ll see what happens soon.

The reported deal between the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics to send Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers to play for the Clippers is off. The Clippers weren’t willing to give what the Celtics’ asked for and that’s why the deal was broken. Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Clippers had “cold feet” when discussing the deal and the payouts they’d have to make.

As Clippers-Celtics talks fall apart, several sources tell Y! that Clippers had “cold feet’ on the financial payouts needed to close deal.

Danny Ainge has called Doc Rivers to tell him that talks are done, sources tell Y! Sports. Ainge told him he still wants him as coach.

This is huge news for both sides of the deal. With the trade off–for now, at least–both sides have to return to the way things were. Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers have to return to the Celtics for another season with the team.

The Clippers have to keep whatever they had on the table–which should be easy. However, this shows Chris Paul that you weren’t willing to give what it takes to win. That could possibly be a deal breaker between Paul and the Clippers.

Its going to be weird for Rivers to return to this very same team that he was trying to get away from. Most of the deals that the Celtics have on their books are long term ones. These players wanted to be coached by Doc Rivers. For him to try to make this move behind their backs seems like a backhanded gesture by Rivers.

This is just a really weird situation and it will likely continue to be. This is likely not done by no means. Lets not forget when the trade between the Clippers and the New Orleans Hornets was “dead”. Now Chris Paul is walking around in a Clippers jersey.

Keep your eyes open for trade talks heating back up. If it happens, it has to be relatively soon before June 30th. The Clippers coaching search should continue for now.
