On Gino’s Jungle the other day, I created a post titled, “Rondo Scoring 2 Points Is The Best Invention Since Gino’s Jungle“. The title may be somewhat of a hyperbole, but I see it as being an exaggerated tale of the truth. As the season progresses, it has become noticeable to me that the team plays far better when Rondo is scoring less, and looking to pass the ball more. The team actually does great when you (as a fan), get frustrated with Rondo with the fact that he just decided to pass up a wide open layup to dish the ball out to an open player. In the beginning of the season it was like his assists were his points. He wanted to rack up as many assists as possible. Then, when the Big 3 lost some time to injury, he became a scorer and has kept the mentality for the majority of the time over the past month that the whole team has been back together. It wasn’t until lately that his point totals plummeted and the team is beginning to look back to normal. Is this a fair assumption… or is 1+1 not equal to 2? Feel free to vote on the poll and comment on the post at Gino’s Jungle if you strongly agree or disagree with me.

Before the season started, many Celtics fans had the same feeling that this years bench had the ability to be starters on some of the teams in the NBA. On paper it is beautiful. Sheed, Marquis Daniels, Nate Robinson, and Big Baby are all players who have proven they can get the job done. Yet, when the season began, there wasn’t much to get excited about. They were average at best, and when they came into the game leads were typically given back, instead of gained upon. Defecits were increased, instead of decreased. That wasn’t what we expected.

Much of this can be attributed to the injuries that plagued the bench (it did the starters as well). Big Baby was hurt right before the first game until Christmas, and right as he was about to come back onto the court, Marquis Daniels got injured until around the All Star break. Match that with how Rasheed Wallace has been playing far below his standards, and it became difficult to watch the bench perform.

Lately, however, the bench has been terrific. Marquis Daniels struggled, but is starting to shift his game back around. Big Baby is an animal getting offensive boards, and in the last few games he has finally started hitting his mid range shot that helped lead the Celtics to the 2nd round of last years playoffs. ALSO, as hard as it is for me to say (because it may change tomorrow) Rasheed Wallace has begun to play. He is finally playing a little bit of defense, is getting in the post to work, and is taking (for the most part) only threes that are within the scheme of the offense.

Everything is slowly starting to work its way to how we expected it to be. Officially, in mid March, we are going to see the Celtics that we expected to see in October. As far as I am concerened, whatever works. It is a good thing to get the game on an upward slope now, instead of peaking too early. I stick to my saying that I made mid season, that this year is working like a book that goes from one page, to the next, to the next, and ends with the happy ending.
