Strengths

Offensive Versatility:

We have seen Monk be a huge threat from 3-point range this season, shooting 41.9% from 3. He has already attempted 198 3-pointers on the season. Monk went absolutely bananas in a win against North Carolina this year, going 8-12 from 3-point range and scoring 47 points. However, Monk is much more than just a 3-point shooter. He uses terrific ball fakes to open himself up for the mid-range game, but also can get to the rim, and is a really good finisher with both hands. Monk is the leading scorer in the SEC and has scored in double digits in every single game this season. Like his backcourt teammate, De’Aaron Fox, Monk is scary when it comes to fast breaks and transition scoring.

Athleticism:

For his size and height, Monk is a ridiculous athlete. His athleticism and quick hands help him on defense, while also giving him a great advantage when getting to the basket. He is extremely quick and has a lot of bounce in his step. You won’t find many shooting guards at this size with an 8’3” standing reach. Monk’s athletic abilities give him outstanding potential that will entice teams to draft him early on in the first round.

Weaknesses

Size:

Despite his athleticism, Monk is only 6’3.” Size could become a factor for him in the NBA when covering shooting guards with more length and height. Taller guards can post him up, or shoot over him. He doesn’t have great point guard skills either. Size may also limit his upside in terms of defensive potential.

Shot Selection:

Monk still tends to take poor perimeter jump shots at times. He is shooting under 50.0% from the field. He needs to utilize his ability to get to the rim off the dribble more, instead of taking contested outside jump shots. Matching up against elite defenders in the NBA will only make life harder for Monk. So, he shouldn’t expect his perimeter looks to get any easier.

Overview

Monk is the best shooting guard prospect in this draft. He has outstanding athleticism, shooting ability, and overall scoring ability. His small size and his shot selection both can have an impact on his game at the next level. Everyone has fallen in love with his big shot making in big moments and his athleticism. Monk will be in contention for a top seven pick in this year’s draft.
