Boston Celtics Daily Dish: Of Rings And Bling

Good Friday morning to you, Celtics nation!

I’m sitting at work with zero network connectivity right now – a pretty big problem when you teach a Mass Media class that publishes blogs all day long.  My students don’t seem to mind their student halls, however, and I sure don’t mind having time to bring you the Daily Dish a bit earlier than normal today, so let’s do this!

NBA.com seems fascinated with the concept of being ring-less today.   First, they are running a piece that breaks down which ring-less players are running out of time to earn their bling; here’s a snippet.

"With 15 of 20 titles hogged by three franchises – and Hakeem Olajuwon‘s Houston teams grabbing two more – vying for the leftovers was a game of musical chairs. Gary Payton and Clyde Drexler managed to grab rings on their way out the door. The old-warhorse-to-the-Spurs-or-Lakers-seeking-his-ring became an annual tale of spring.Guys like Pierce, Garnett and Nowitzki would be on the brink of joining that club to which no NBA star wants to belong – the Ringless of Honor – if not for the Celtics’ and Mavericks’ one-and-done peaks in 2008 and 2011.Meanwhile, the waiting list gets refreshed, not erased. Here are the stars who – by virtue of their status and their career trajectories – are most on the clock as the 2014-15 season approaches (with each’s level of urgency noted) . . . ."

Meanwhile, here’s a video about the ring-less, yet still Hall of Fame-worthy, Charles Barkley.   Nice Flashback Friday moment.

When it comes to Rajon Rondo, no one knows what the 2014-2015 will bring.  Will he be traded?  Will he become a mentor to the many youngsters on Boston’s roster?  Will he come close to averaging a triple-double?  Will I stop asking questions?  Yes!  And here’s the reason I bring this all up – enjoy these bold predictions about Rondo’s upcoming season.

Since it’s Friday, I think I’ll leave you on a positive note!  Even though many of us are expecting the Boston Celtics to be a bit of a hot mess this year once again, according to Jeff Green everyone on the roster took it upon themselves to get better this summer, so who knows – maybe this team will surprise us a bit?  Enjoy this preview, and thanks for the read!

"Several of the players, including captain Rondo, spent large portions of their summer in town, working with the coaching staff. Others, like Green, stationed themselves elsewhere.Green, who returned this week, still spent plenty of time on his game and believes his teammates did likewise.“I think we ended the season well, on a good note,” he said while appearing at an event in Mattapan to support the “My Brother’s Keeper” program for young black and Latino men. “And this whole summer each guy took it upon themselves to get better, which is going to make our team better.”"
