Boston Celtics Tank Report: The End Is Near!

The end is near, Boston Celtics fans!

No, I’m not talking about the end of the world.  As bad as this season has been for us Celtics fans, it hasn’t been THAT bad!

Has it?   Step off of that ledge, please!

Seriously: the end of the regular season is almost here, and when that final game comes and goes, the Boston Celtics will be that much closer to the NBA Draft Lottery.  Let’s take a look at where the Celtics currently rank in the standings.

Thanks to Boston’s recent abysmal play, and a two-game winning streak courtesy of the Orlando Magic, the Celtics now find themselves tied with the Magic for the third-worst record in the NBA.  Looking ahead, the Celtics still must play two teams that are also lottery-bound (Philadelphia and Cleveland), as well as two playoff-bound teams (the Bobcats and the Wizards).  Meanwhile, every team left on Orlando’s schedule is a playoff team: Washington, Brooklyn, Chicago, and Indiana.  Advantage Orlando – they’re going to lose pretty much every one of those games.

Sadly, there is no chance of the Celtics catching Philadelphia or Milwaukee in the standings, but having the third- or fourth-worst record is nothing to sneeze at.  To refresh your memories, here are the percentages of winning the number one pick in the draft, courtesy of Wikipedia.org:

  1. 250 combinations, 25.0% chance of receiving the #1 pick
  2. 199 combinations, 19.9% chance
  3. 156 combinations, 15.6% chance
  4. 119 combinations, 11.9% chance
  5. 88 combinations, 8.8% chance
  6. 63 combinations, 6.3% chance
  7. 43 combinations, 4.3% chance
  8. 28 combinations, 2.8% chance
  9. 17 combinations, 1.7% chance
  10. 11 combinations, 1.1% chance
  11. 8 combinations, 0.8% chance
  12. 7 combinations, 0.7% chance
  13. 6 combinations, 0.6% chance
  14. 5 combinations, 0.5% chance

At this point, I’m predicting the Boston Celtics will complete the 2013-2014 NBA regular season with the 4th-worst record in the league.  The Utah Jazz are in the Wild Wild West, where teams are jockeying for playoff position like crazy, but the Jazz only face one more playoff team this season.   Call me crazy – I dare you! – but I just don’t see Utah  losing more games than Boston.

Whoo-hoo!  Celtics pride!

Sarcasm aside, Boston is virtually a lock to land a top five pick in this year’s draft, so suck it up and endure, Celtics fans!  The end of our suffering is near!
