If you have watched a nationally televised NBA game in the past two to three years then you know that the National Basketball Association is “Where Amazing Happens”. If you have followed the Boston Celtics the past two years then you have probably heard about a significant knee injury to a guy named Kevin Garnett. Well, this past offseason KG had knee surgery and ever since the talk about his knee won’t stop.
I am not going to go on and say KG is 100% healthy, nobody that has played more than a year in the NBA is 100% healthy. What I am going to say is that Kevin Garnett is not hurt. I am so sick of hearing about KG “not being the same” or “not as explosive”. If you expected KG to come back and instantly be like the KG we saw during the 2007-2008 season then you are crazy. We all knew, and agreed, that even a KG at 60% was better than not having him at all. Yet, I have heard game after game about KG “lacking lateral movement” or that he is “scared to come down on his knee”.
KG is lacking lateral movement right now, he is getting beat defensively at times, but last night and the past few games he has showed tremendous improvement. Isn’t this what we were looking for at the beginning of the year? We all knew that KG was going to need at least half the season to get back to being himself. So my question is, Why do people keep bringing it up?
Right now it seems as if Garnett is noticing his flaws (yes, he does have flaws) and is altering his game to make sure he is still helping the Celtics win games. KG is still bringing the intensity night in and night out but seems to be more focused on helping the team out offensively. Is this a bad thing? I don’t believe it is. The past three games Garnett has been knocking down his jumper like it’s routine and is giving the Celtics another go to guy besides Pierce. KG hit the game winning shot against the Knicks and has gone 17-18 from the field during the past two games. KG’s play this past week earned him the Hardwood Houdini Player of the Week.
Again I am just going to remind you that I am not saying KG is 100% or that he does not have flaws. Anyone that knows basketball knows that he is lacking movement, at times, on his knee. My biggest problem is that people will not give it up. Please do me a favor as a fellow Celtics fan and be patient. We are seeing great improvements from Garnett since the start of the season and it will only get better.
