Starbury: Please Baby, Please Baby, No! Please Baby, Baby Baby Please! No!
According to Marc Stein and ESPN, “The New York Knicks and Stephon Marbury were nearing a buyout agreement Tuesday afternoon that would clear the way for Marbury to sign with the Boston Celtics.” According to the NY Post, the buyout is complete. Oy!
Egads man! I understand there are concerns about depth in the backcourt. I understand they gotta do something. I understand Sam Cassell is not walking through that door. I understand they’re going to have to make a move. Make a move. Hudson Honda style. I get it. I do. But this guy?
It’s like deja vu all over again. John Y. Brown all over gain. Bob McAdoo all over again. Sidney Wicks. Curtis Rowe. Guys like that there. I know Marbury and Kevin Garnett have played together before. I also know Marbury said this when comparing the Big Ticket to Amar’e Stoudemire: “Not to take nothing away from Kevin. He was a great talent coming out of high school. But…It’s not even close. He doesn’t even compare to Amare. It’s two different people. It’s like Michael Jordan and Mario Elie. It’s not even close.” Are you kidding me? That’s the guy you want on this team?
Having said all that, if Starbury does come to Boston I will support him. He will become my twelfth favorite player in the league. It’s unfortunate, but that’s what happens when you’re an insufferable homer. Doh! Until then, I will fight this with every fiber of my being.
